Rural Digital Inclusion project

Overview

The Rural Digital Inclusion project is a partnership between iNorthumberland, Community Action Northumberland (CAN) and NICRE. The project is supported by partners including Commsworld, and works alongside the installation of full fibre broadband across Northumberland. It will help rural communities and businesses to get full value from the improvements to digital infrastructure by:

  • Providing practical support to help people use technology in their daily lives
  • Working with partners across Northumberland and beyond so that new initiatives complement and build on what is already available to support digital inclusion.
  • Capturing feedback and learning throughout to develop a blueprint for rural digital inclusion for other communities and local and regional policy-makers

Get involved - become a digital champion

Over the next three years the project will recruit and train volunteer digital champions and connect them with village halls and other community spaces to develop a local offer of support.  This could include running a regular drop-in service, organising 'techy-tea parties' or training sessions, popping up at existing meetings and events, and helping local groups and businesses make more use of digital technology in their work.

Join us for a Techy Tea party

Techy tea parties are one off events where people can drop in and chat to other people in their community over a cuppa, while getting advice and support with using technology and getting online while also having a cuppa and a chat.  NICRE and CAN are working with village halls and other local organisations and volunteers to run a series of these events in Northumberland in early 2025.

Whether you're looking for help using technology, or just want to get to know people in your area and share experiences, we'd love you to come along. Our friendly team of volunteer digital champions will be there to answer questions and give 'how to' demonstrations and top tips.

Even if you're not looking for support yourself, coming along is a great way to find out more about the Rural Digital Inclusion project.  There are lots of ways to get involved - from spreading the word to volunteering your digital skills to help others.

Our first Techy Tea parties are at:

  • Shilbottle Community Hall - Wednesday 12 February, 2-4pm
  • Jubilee Hall, Newton on the Moor - Thursday 27 February, 2-4pm
  • Netherwitton Village Hall - Tuesday 4 March, 2-4pm
  • Wylam Institute Community Association - Thursday 13 March, 2-4pm
  • Thropton War Memorial Hall - Monday 17 March, 2.30-4.30pm.

We're really grateful to a range of partners who are supporting these events.  Members of Age UK Northumberland's Scams Support and Advice team are joining our February tea parties, along with colleagues from Alncom who are working in these areas and were available to answer questions about broadband and what ultrafast fibre could mean for your household or business.  We're also linking up with other local providers and organisations who can support with building digital skills, so look out for more details here soon.

If you're not able to get along to our first Techy Tea parties, keep an eye on this page for future events - or contact the Rural Digital Inclusion project team if you'd like our help to organise one in your area - nicre@newcastle.ac.uk.

Other ways to support

CAN and NICRE are also keen to hear from organisations which can support the project – whether by hosting a digital champion, encouraging staff to volunteer, donating devices, helping raise awareness, or sharing case studies of how they support digital inclusion.

Throughout the project we'll be capturing and sharing learning about ways to boost digital access, skills and confidence in rural communities, and showcasing case studies on our Innovation Portal.  We would love to hear stories and examples from any part of the UK and beyond.
