Rural Catalyst: supporting innovation-led rural development

Overview

We and Rural Design Centre (RDC) are working in partnership as Rural Catalyst to support innovation-led rural economic and community development, funded by the North East Combined Authority.

Together we're tackling the challenges facing rural areas through innovation, design, community engagement and knowledge transfer.

The Rural Catalyst collaboration builds on previous informal joint working between NICRE and RDC, including co-hosting the Rural Catalyst conferences in the North East in 2021 and 2022.

Upcoming events and opportunities

Innovation workshops

As part of Rural Catalyst, we're running a series of innovation workshops for residents, community organisations, businesses, service providers and local government. Each workshop will focus on a key challenge area. Together participants will explore the issues and opportunities, and discover and re-design new approaches and solutions.

Our first two innovation workshops focussed on health and social care in rural communities and tackling transportation challenges in rural communities. The next workshop will take place later this year - more details coming soon.

Hadrian's Wall Design Sprint 2024

Rural Catalyst is also collaborating with Northumberland Small Business Service and Hadrian’s Wall Partnership to deliver an exciting new globally-focussed tourism project.

The project will work with up to 15 small and medium-sized businesses to develop ideas for new products and services that boost engagement with Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage site. Businesses will have the opportunity to take part in a six-week long supported creative communications project and process. This will culminate in a two-day long Design Sprint on 25/26 September, facilitated by the Rural Design Centre.
