Overview

Powering People is a partnership project between NICRE and Community Action Northumberland (CAN). It aims to provide practical support and advocacy for households in Northumberland who are living off the electricity grid, whilst also building evidence to inform wider change.

About the project

It's estimated over 400 households in Northumberland – and more in other rural and remote areas across the UK - are not connected to the electricity grid. The majority of these households rely on diesel generators to meet their basic electricity needs This leads to higher costs, fuel poverty and increased carbon emissions. As the UK moves away from fossil fuels, and more of day-to-day life is powered by electricity, addressing these challenges is increasingly urgent.

The Powering People project is aimed at reducing fuel poverty and supporting the transition of Northumberland’s off-electricity grid households to sustainable energy solutions.  It will also improve wider understanding of the challenges faced by off-electricity grid households and sharing of solutions across the UK.

NICRE's role in the project includes bringing together existing research, tools and case studies, facilitating development of new resources and community solutions, supporting knowledge exchange and helping to ensure that the experiences of off-grid households are reflected in innovation and decision-making.

Webinar: Wednesday 4 March, 10am–12pm, Online

NICRE and CAN are hosting a webinar providing an opportunity to explore research insights, lived experiences and practical solutions relating to off-electricity grid households.

We hope the event will help build a nationwide network to continue to share learning and strengthen the case for better policy and support for these communities.

If you live off the electricity grid, provide energy or fuel poverty advice, or work in the energy sector as a researcher, policymaker or practitioner, we’d love you to be part of the conversation.
