Research opportunity in rural innovation

Vacancy

The National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise (NICRE) is recruiting a Research Assistant/Associate in Rural Innovation to join its team at Newcastle University.

The role – which will be considered for full time, part time or job share – is to research and facilitate NICRE’s innovation projects in rural communities and enterprises in the North East by working with a network of partners.

These innovation projects combine theory and practice to support the development of new practices, products and services that provide tangible benefits to rural businesses and communities.

The deadline for applications is 15 December 2023.

Exciting opportunity to help unlock potential

NICRE director Jeremy Phillipson, Professor of Rural Development at the Centre for Rural Economy at Newcastle University, said: “Our innovation projects are a key part of our activities.

“Working directly with partners in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, they bring together theory and practice to encourage new ways of thinking.

“This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of this work and help unlock potential and support thriving rural businesses and communities.”

NICRE is ideally looking to recruit a candidate with knowledge relating to one or more of the following areas: net zero and clean growth; energy; agricultural transition; agri-food systems or supply chains; digitalisation and data economy; health and care.

The post-holder will also be expected to provide support for the development of business cases for funding and associated partnerships as part of the regional and national work of NICRE.

The position is a fixed-term contract until 31 August 2024 with a view to extend. For more information and to apply, see the job advert. For informal queries, contact Jeremy Phillipson at jeremy.phillipson@newcastle.ac.uk

An example of a NICRE innovation project is where the team is working in partnership with Community Action Northumberland and Rural Design Centre to help communities in rural Northumberland transition to net zero, reduce energy costs and increase resilience through installing solar panels with associated battery storage on community buildings.
