Overview

​At Intelligen, we’re making it easier- and cleaner - for people to get around rural areas. We design and build solar-powered charging stations for e-bikes and light electric vehicles (LEVs), right here in Northumberland. 

​Made from 90% recycled materials and designed for the British weather, our charging stations can be installed anywhere from market towns and national parks to railway stations and rural trails. Because they’re fully off-grid, they’re ideal for places other solutions can’t reach. 

​Our mission is simple: to build a national network that helps people travel further without the car, visit new places, and support local economies - powered by sunshine, not fossil fuels.  

Our offer

​We offer a practical, scalable solution to a growing challenge: how to keep people moving on LEVs without relying on the grid. 

​Our powerTRIP, powerPOD, and powerPARK stations are made from recycled materials and built by our skilled Northumberland team. Each one is fire-safe, low-maintenance, and designed to work in real-world rural locations. 

​From simple charge points to multi-bike hubs with lighting, USB charging, and secure storage, we’ve built in the features users need and the data tools that site operators value. 

​Our stations track usage and solar output, helping site owners and local authorities demonstrate demand and plan ahead. We handle everything from site advice to delivery and support, working with councils, tourism groups, and landowners to bring zero-carbon travel to life. 

Key challenges

As more people are buying and using e-bikes, the need for safe and reliable charging is a priority, especially in rural areas where options are limited and journeys are longer. But concerns about fire safety are growing, often fuelled by headlines about home charging. That’s why we’ve built safety into every product, using fire-resistant materials and following the latest Fire Protection Association guidelines. 

​Another issue is visibility: many riders don’t know where they can charge up, especially outside cities. To solve that, we’re building a recognisable network and our JNPR webapp, so people can find charging points, plan routes, and travel with confidence even when they’re far from home. 

​Councils also face pressure to prove that active travel investments work. Our stations help with that too, capturing usage data and solar energy output that backs up funding bids and informs future plans.

Key successes

​We’ve grown from an innovative idea to a fast-expanding network of solar-powered charging stations across the UK, with full county-wide rollouts now underway. We’re working closely with the Department for Transport, local authorities, county councils, and key tourism providers to install joined-up infrastructure that makes e-biking a more appealing, practical, and low-carbon choice.  

​Our stations are already in place in visitor destinations, business parks, and transport hubs - and they’re proving their value quickly. By reducing range anxiety and making it easier to travel longer distances, we’re helping more people switch from car to e-bike travel. 

​We’ve supported LCWIP and Net Zero plans and contributed to rural transport strategies by offering infrastructure that’s easy to install, accessible to all, and powered by clean energy. Site operators such as Helen and Damien at Stanegate Hideaways report that they’ve welcomed new visitors specifically because of our charging stations, and usage data shows they’re in regular demand.  

​Feedback from users tells us our stations such as Vindolanda Roman Fort are helping people ride further, feel safer, and make sustainable travel part of everyday life - exactly the change we set out to spark.

Future plans

​We’re now scaling up to create the UK’s most extensive off-grid LEV charging network connecting rural communities, travel hubs, and tourist destinations with clean, solar-powered infrastructure. 

​A major highlight for 2025 is the launch of a brand-new 120-mile scenic e-bike route along the Northumberland Coast, featuring our powerTRIP and powerPOD stations at key points of interest, towns, and attractions. We’ll also be rolling out powerPODs for community e-cargo bike projects, helping local businesses and organisations deliver goods and services sustainably. 

​To support all this, we’re developing the JNPR app – an accessible and interactive tool that helps LEV users find charging stations, plan routes, and travel confidently even when far from home. Whether you’re commuting, touring, or just exploring somewhere new, JNPR puts clean energy and connection at your fingertips. 

​As we expand across the UK, we’re focused on building partnerships with councils, landowners, tourism boards, and forward-thinking businesses. Our goal is simple: to make it easy for everyone, everywhere, to travel further with less impact - and a lot more joy.
